“And now that my task is done, I will take my place…amongst the legends of the past..”
The last of the Tirisfal Guardians, bestowed with mighty powers to fight against the demons of the Burning Legion; carrier of the legendary staff Atiesh; the protector and the curse of Azeroth; a name whispered with legends: the Magus Medivh…
Through long ages, the mage communion known as the Council of Tirisfal had pooled their powers to empower a single magus to become the “Guardian” in their efforts to thwart the Burning Legion, whom would return the immense power by the end of their service period. However one such Guardian, Aegwynn, had lost her trust in the Council and refused to give back her powers until she found a suitable candidate.
45 years before the opening of the Dark Portal, the Council of Tirisfal assigned a taskforce known as the Tirisgarde to capture Aegwynn. Tirisgarde Nielas Aran managed to find Aegwynn but during this hunt, their hostility turned into love. Facing an opportunity long sought, Aegwynn asked Nielas to bless her with a child. This way, she could imbue her child with the powers of a Guardian and keep it away from the Council. Nielas accepted this offer and they had a son. Aegwynn named him Medivh, which meant “the keeper of secrets” and hid away the overwhelming powers of a Guardian deep in Medivh’s soul. Alas, the power wasn’t all that she transferred: The Burning Legion’s master Sargeras’ essence, having been hiding in Aegwynn’s soul following his avatar’s defeat in her hands, also passed to the infant Medivh.
Shortly after Aegwynn, Medivh and Nielas had moved to Stormwind, Aegwynn left his son to Nielas to be raised and left the city. Nielas convinced the Council of Tirisfal to let Medivh be the next Guardian. Medivh grew up with his best friends Llane Wrynn and Anduin Lothar in Stormwind. At the age of 14, his Guardian powers were unleashed and the raw magical energy led to the death of his father, and threw Medivh into a state of coma.
When Medivh reawakened, Llane Wrynn had become the king and Anduin Lothar was a Knight of Stormwind. Medivh became a renowned mage of Stormwind and moved to the tower called Karazhan, built by her mother when she wanted to lay low during her Guardianship.
Still hiding sinisterly in Medivh’s soul, Sargeras started to unravel his terrible plans in this period. Dominated by Sargeras’ overwhelming presence in his soul, Medivh contacted the orcish warlock Gul’dan from the world Draenor, and together they opened the Dark Portal that linked the two worlds. This made it possible for the orcs to pour into Azeroth in crowds. While the orcs, infused with the demon blood they had drunk, laid waste to the lands of Azeroth, Anduin Lothar, half-orc Garona and Medivh’s apprentice Khadgar realized the darkness in the Guardian’s soul. They led a warband in an attempt to invade Karazhan. During the fight, Khadgar was exposed to Medivh’s magic which cursed him to instantly get decades older. By the end, Anduin and Khadgar’s warband was victorious and Medivh was slain.
Unbeknownst to most, Medivh’s soul was free from Sargeras’ control and survived. After getting resurrected by his mother Aegwynn, Medivh returned during the Third War period. He went to the capital of Lordaeron and warned King Terenas II against the brooding darkness, and told him to lead his people to west, to the ancient lands of Kalimdor. Unfortunately, King Terenas II did not take this warning into consideration. Medivh then went to Dalaran to warn Archmage Antonidas against the same threat, only to receive a similar response. During their conversation, the young mage Jaina Proudmoore sensed the prodigious power radiating from this seemingly mad Prophet. Jaina ran into him once more while she was investigating the mysterious Plague spreading throughout Lordaeron with Prince Arthas. Just like his father and Antonidas, Arthas discarded the warnings of Medivh as he moved on to his own grim destiny. Jaina, however, listened and took action as advised.
Medivh had more luck on the Horde side. He entered the dreams of the orcish Warchief Thrall and the orc answered. Together with the legendary Grommash Hellscream, he took the orcs to the continent of Kalimdor in the west.
Jaina and Thrall set away their differences as Medivh revealed his true identity. The Horde and the Alliance, with the aid of the enigmatic night elves, faced off the Burning Legion and managed to defeat one of the main leaders of the demons, Archimond the Defiler.
As such, Medivh paid off for his sins against Azeroth in the past and fulfilled his duty. But the rumors whisper that an old and familiar enemy brings trouble to other worlds. So the Last Guardian Medivh’s task is to prevent the Nexus or any world from falling into Gul’dan’s and his masters’ hands!
