HISTORY OF DIABLO – PART 1: ANU AND TATHAMET

There was emptiness before the beginning. No air, no warmth, no light, no darkness… It was all but nothingness, except for one smooth, flawless pearl. Within this pearl, the incomprehensibly mighty Anu was dreaming. Anu, with its body composed of bright diamond, was the sum of the whole existence: Good and evil, light and darkness, physical and mystical, joy and sadness… Everything was made up of the reflections on its crystal facets. And in its eternal dream, Anu decided to get rid of its twisted, evil facets in order to become totally pure and perfect; thus, the concepts of evil, darkness, sadness and many others were discarded from its body and ended the disharmony along with the dissonance.

The concepts that were left out burned with rage and pride, and in accordance with their nature, they came together to form a terrible creature: the Dragon Tathamet. Tathamet, with each of his seven heads filled with eternal darkness and death that devoured all with every breath, was the complete opposite of Anu. It didn’t take long for the first Prime Evil to take its revenge on Anu for their forced separation as Tathamet began to spread its twisted effect through the entire existence. And so started the unending war between Anu and Tathamet…

Though separate entities, Anu’s and the Dragon’s fates were bound within the womb of the pearl. The Diamond Warrior and the Seven-Headed Dragon, who were equal in power, warred against each other in the name of light and shadow for eons beyond comprehention. As they battled for thousands of years without one defeating the other, the two enemies spent all their energies. Their final blows to each other, the outcome of unfathomable fury and their last remaining strength, ended up being the deities’ demise. It unleashed such magnificent energy that it created the universe as we know it.

All the stars in the sky and the darkness surrounding them, everything we touch, feel and know, every nameless mystery came to being upon the death of Anu and Tathamet. Ever-changing and growing Pandemonium came into existence at the epicenter of this violent energy. In the chaotic heart of Pandemonium lay the unique gem, Eye of Anu, “The Heart of Creation”; also known as the Worldstone. The Worldstone was the foundation of all places, times and possibilities.

Although Anu and Tathamet destroyed each other, it was more than enough for the remnants of their deific essences to form Heaven and Hell. Anu’s sparkling spine spun out for ages due to the massive outburst but it finally slowed and cooled, and formed the Crystal Arch. The Crystal Arch became the foundation stone of the High Heavens and thus, the angels, beings of light and sound with the Diamond Warrior’s essence, were born when the music from Anu’s spine was the most harmonious.

As Heaven cooled and thus came into existence up in the sky, Tathamet’s blackened, smoldering husk formed Hell in the lower depths of Pandemonium. The severed seven heads of the dragon gave birth to seven demons: The three most powerful ones were called Prime Evils, and the four Lesser Evils started an endless war of hierarchy.

And thus, the history repeated itself… The terrible Lords of the Burning Hells and the noble Angels of High Heavens came face to face, battling against each other in the Eternal Conflict: A faint reflection of the conflict between Anu and Tathamet. As it is mentioned in “The Book of Long Shadows”, the Eternal Conflict would continue in countless planes and take countless lives for countless ages. Until some things -that were unknown to both demons and angels themselves- were revealed…
